Album Review The Vampire Weekend - Contra

Got this album the other day and just can't stop listening to it. I first got into Vampire Weekend same way I get into most my music, Triple J Hottest 100 they had a little song on their a few years ago called Oxford Comma, at first I didn't like it but then it slowly started getting stuck in my head and I would find myself singing "Who gives a fuck about the oxford comma" so I knew I had to get on this bands bandwagon, so i purchased the first cd (self titlted) and recently discovered they had a new cd out so I knew I had to buy it. Now the first is good don't get me wrong and i found myself singing along and bopping but Contra has just blown me away (as I type this I am listening to it and dancing on my chair)
Each song has it's own little quirky guitar riff or Ezra Koenig's voice. (prime example of this is Californian English where he sings along side a keyboard which makes his voice sound disorted and making it impossible to sing along to)
The Lyrics are what makes this album unique though you sing along and then stop and question what you just sang out loudly in public. My personal favourite line is from Horchata "In December drinking horchata I'd look psychotic in a balaclava".

Or the signature song of the album "I think Ur A Contra" actually sent me searching the web for what contra meant, still unsure but I got a fair idea.
Overall the album takes you on a half hour journey with each song different from the last the only way of knowing they are by the same band is by Ezra's unique voice, one of the most unique in the music biz at the moment probably (Big call? yes but I wouldn't just say that about anyone)

Lets hope they tour Australia again soon so I can see them live. 5/5
